A whirlwind tour

This past weekend, Katrina and I traveled to DC for my mom's annual Christmas party. It was great fun to see everyone and sing Christmas carols, and Bill and Carla finally got a chance to meet the weebeastie, who sadly was not in a great mood. Whatever could be wrong, we wondered as she clung to me and cried if I put her down. Then we saw - three teeth coming up top, with one just through the gumline. Poor darling. Some Tylenol helped, but she was still unhappy the next day when we traveled to Uncle Harry and Aunt Mary's house for their Christmas party. The two highlights of the trip as far as Katrina was concerned, were Uncle Harry's trainset, which at first frightened her, but then proved to be extremely interesting, and her walker/car from her cousin Dan. Not only did she enjoy being pushed on it by John, but this morning she crawled all the way across the living room floor to pull up on it. What fun!

She crawls, she crawls!

I guess we'd better child proof the house for real this time!

Colonial Christmas

So this past weekend John, Katrina, our parents and I headed out to Sturbridge, MA which has a live history village (akin to Williamsburg). Ever since I met John, I have heard about the Publick House's apple pie with cheddar cheese for breakfast, so it seemed natural in planning a weekend away for him that I would pick a place where he and his parents had fond memories. We headed up on Friday and drove the whole way up with a quick break for lunch. Katrina slept most of the way as she was getting over a head cold that everyone else was also getting over. What can I say? In our family we do a lot of sharing.

Saturday was our lazy day. We took in some of the local sites and did some shopping. Our plan was to go on a brewery tour in the afternoon, but after we drove up to the site, we learned that they only do tours for large groups. Instead of tasting beer samples, we walked around their wild animal preserve and fed the goats, emus, pigs, and Shetland ponies that we saw. Katrina held on tight to me, but got a big kick out of some of the larger animals.

Sunday was our big day. It started out with breakfast with Santa, which was something that my mom took me to every year while I was growing up. We were convinced that Katrina would be nervous and probably cry when she saw the big guy, but she sat patiently on his lap while we snapped pictures. It was only when he reached out to hold her hand, that she pulled back and looked a bit worried.

After her morning nap, we headed to the village and walked around looking at the barns, hearths, blacksmith, tinsmith, potter's shed, and general store (among others). I was most excited to find a bottle and breastpump from the early 1800s! I didn't know that such a device existed, so it was neat to learn that the idea of a breastpump has been around awhile (and thank god, has advanced a lot!).

After our evening meal (yes, we overdosed on apple pie, sticky buns, and seafood at the Publick House), we headed out to the Christmas Candlelight Village in which the Old Sturbridge Village is lit with candles and the Christmas spirit abounds. We took in the old music performances, learned how to make tin icicles (of which we now have quite a bit adorning our tree), printed Christmas cards with ink blocks, and talked to the "locals" who taught us how to make plum pudding, mulled cider, press tobacco, roast a chicken, and make whisks out of birch branches. It was the perfect end to a very nice weekend.

Last week

Before we headed out to Sturbridge for the weekend (posts and pics coming soon), we had a pretty exciting week. Katrina and I came home from work and daycare to find a beautiful wreath waiting for us from Maya and Jerry. It immediately went up on our door and makes the whole house look inviting. What lovely friends and a thoughtful gift! What they don't know is that we came this close to getting them a wreath this year, but have opted for some handmade treats instead - check the mail in the coming week!

Last week, we also celebrated St. Nick's day. Katrina and I awoke on the morning of the 6th to find that they big man had left presents in our shoes. Weebeastie especially loved the castle and the wooden puzzle whose pieces she excitedly bangs together to make music. What fun!

Katrina also strutted her stuff in her Harely Davidson outfit from Sue, Tom, and Courtney. Her daycare providers said that she made quite the cute motorcycle chick and we have to agree. Her headband wouldn't stay on for a picture though, but we are hopeful that maybe it will next time and that it will be not so cold so that we can wear the motorcycle socks with the outfit!

Happy, happy birthday DADDY!

Katrina and I want to wish you an awesome birthday and a fantastic year. We are so blessed to have you in our lives. We wish we could give you a big family bear hug, but we'll be saving up for when we see you on Thursday.

December begins!

This past weekend, we went to Kuhn's tree farm and cut down Katrina's first Christmas tree. It took us all of 30 minutes in the freezing cold and picking between two trees - it was the eight foot tall one that spoke to me, though after John tried with a loose saw, I think he wished that a shorter one had whispered in the wind to me. We were accompanied by Christmas music that Kim brought along with her handy iPod speaker attachment and the music continued through the day while we covered the house with Christmas decorations and put up the tree. Katrina points to the tree whenever she comes downstairs and goes "oooooo" at the angel (who had to be tied to the tree because she couldn't fit on its top - god I love tall trees!). Even the cats have decided to accept the evergreen. Copernicus has climbed it several times and Athena thinks that the base is her own personal drinking fountain. Ah, Christmas has begun!

We also spent some time trying on different dresses in order to pick out the "perfect" one for her school pictures today. She looked great in all of them (thanks grandma!). Here's just a sampling!
